Choosing Your Bathroom Rugs
Thursday, November 8th, 2007    Subscribe To Our FeedYou wouldn’t think it was particularly important what type of rug you put down in the bathroom provided it matched the theme of the bathroom however it is important to consider the materials that the rub is made of. Bathroom rugs are destined to have a pretty rough time either from being stood on or by becoming wet. Good material can make them more durable and less resistant to wear and tear. It can also ensure that the rug dries out after becoming wet and thus does not promote the growth of mold that can be hazardous to the health. Thus when it comes to choosing bathroom rugs there are two types available: those that are specifically designed for use in the bathroom and those that aren’t.
Rugs Made For The Bathroom
Often the rugs designed specifically for bathroom use are very plain and made either of cotton or chenille. This is because these types of bathroom rugs are less susceptible to water damage than something like wool. The variety of these bathroom rugs is similar to their price range which can start as low as four dollars. They come in all shapes and sizes and you will be sure to find one that fits the dimensions of your bathroom.
The most common is the cotton bathroom rug which is just a flat, thin mat cut to fit into various bathrooms. Cotton is a durable material, but these bathroom rugs can wear out over time if they are not dried out properly. Chenille bathroom rugs are typically made out of Rayon, Acrylic or polypropylene. These man made fibers are particularly good for bathrooms as they are durable and hold up well despite constant exposure to water.
Alternatives To Made For Bathroom Rugs
There are other types of rugs that aren’t specifically designed for the bathroom, but will work there. Just remember that you need to dry them out properly like a cotton rug or they will become damaged beyond repair. Since some rugs are inexpensive this may not be an issue for some people. One such option is the kelim rug from Persia, China, India or Turkey because they dry out quickly and have less chance of promoting mold or mildew.
A contrast to the soft fabric of a rug, but an alternative all the same, is the bamboo and wooden slates that can be used in bathrooms. They are popular in Europe and have numerous benefits, notably, they will last forever and do not encourage mold growth. Of course they take a bit of getting used to as they are hard on the feet and can be bulky.
Cleaning
Most bathroom rugs are easy to wash since they were designed for harsh treatment. Most will be fine in a washing machine but check the washing instructions label beforehand (if it has no label then it’ll be fine). Use stain removers if you need to get a stain out and wash the rugs separately by color just as you would clothing. It’s not a good idea to wash bathroom rugs with ordinary clothes as the rough fibers of the rugs may damage the clothing, although they will probably be ok with towels. Rinse a rug as you would any other fabric and hang them out of the line to dry. Most can be tumble dried if necessary but as they are often a non essential item it is better to let them dry naturally.
