Overview of Mood Lighting
Friday, July 10th, 2009    Subscribe To Our FeedDid you know you can use light to decorate your home and set a mood? In the movies, “setting the mood” usually involves turning off the lights and lighting lots of candles scattered throughout the room. And indeed, this does set a romantic mood.
A romantic mood can be created just by correctly using your lighting. However, other moods can also be created and it all is dependent on the room in question. Since each room has a different purpose, the mood lighting has to be suitable for the activities that take place in that particular area.
Creating Romantic Mood Lighting To have a romantic feel in a room you will probably make use of low lighting so that shadows will be cast around the room. This gives off an intimate feel and will help you and your partner to forget everything but yourselves. Although candlelight is most certainly one way to do this, the same effect can be achieved by using table lamps with low watt bulbs in them or by dimming the overhead lighting with a special switch.
Dimmer switches are a great option on all of your overhead lights-in the living room, dining room, bedroom, and bathroom especially. These are the four rooms most closely associated with romance or relaxation where it can be advantageous to dim the lights for a little romance or relaxation during the evenings-perhaps for a candlelight dinner or a long soak in the tub-but you also require bright lighting in those same rooms for other functions everyday-like reading, getting dressed, and putting on makeup. You should also consider multiple lighting options in these rooms-with separate switches or power sources-so you can utilize dim, soft lighting when desired and bright, functional light when needed.
Creating a Modern Mood Different from a romantic or relaxing mood, there is the modern feel. This is created by having direct lighting in your home, which is bright and doesn’t cast any shadows. In order to achieve this mood you need to combine monorail and track lighting with overhead lighting. In kitchens you can add under the counter lighting and for dark corners you can add some lamps.
Bright and Cheery for Children As a general rule, bedrooms used by children should have sufficient lighting so that they give off an appearance of being bright and cheery. There is no need to make a second purpose possible in children’s rooms, like what is necessary for adults to turn their bedroom into romantic escapes. For children you should consider overhead lighting that is bright and maybe even use a ceiling fan to improve air circulation in the room. A fan is especially a good choice for those living in warmer climates or who do not have air conditioning. In addition, supply desk lamps for children to use in their room.
Work Areas Need A Functional, Businesslike Mood Home offices and kitchens-where lots of activities are taking place and work is done-require bright, functional lighting to direct light where you need it most. You can achieve this with global overhead lighting or a combination of task lighting options. Bright light in work areas also conveys a positive, energetic, professional mood that is helpful when you’re trying to get things done.
