Ambient lighting can be added to with good utility style lamps. These lighting fixtures are also useful for adding character and decorating a room. You can choose from a large variety of lamps.

You can use a Tiffany lamp, which is made up of multiple pieces of stained glass, to add class and personality to a room. Their uniqueness will set the mood for a room. A table, or floor Tiffany lamp can be used in different situations and places.

Another unique style of lamp is an oriental one. They have paper shades and are usually made of wood. They will enhance a room with their decorative look. These lamps are also a nice accent to a room with an oriental theme.

Office lamps are utility or task illumination. They are usually simple in design and give bright direct illumination. They can be used for your computer area or on your office table. Angle lamps are good for this purpose as you can zero in on detailed work.

Floor lamps can be useful for reading, as they can be positioned in corners of a room close to your favorite reading spots. Floor lamps come in a number of different types and can be quite decorative. You can either have a modern look with a contemporary type of lamp, or a traditional decor with a lighting fixture style like a Tiffany lamp.

For a soft diffused light you can try Torch lamps, which point upward and reflect light from the ceiling. They give a cozy feel to the area and are nice additions to existing ambient illumination. A bedroom or sitting room is ideal for these fixtures. You can also use different colors. A yellow light will add to the romantic feel.

Choosing the size of the lamp will depend on what your purpose for the lamp is and where it will be placed. For example; a table lamp will need to fit on your side table or office desk. It should be bright enough to read and work by but not so big that nothing else will fit on the work area. A bedside table will often have a shade and you will need to be sure that it is not so big that the lamp will get knocked over easily. On the other hand it should be big enough to give adequate illumination for your task.

The weight of the lamp should be considered. A heavier lamp will be less likely to be knocked over. With heavier traffic and especially with young children, a heavier lamp would be the best choice. You can use a lighter more fancy lamp in areas where there will be less traffic.

The best type of lamp should be selected carefully. You can choose contemporary or traditional looking lamps. Your room set up and decor will be the deciding factor for your selection. You can buy some spectacular contemporary looking torch and floor lamps to make your room unique.
